Tulip, The Symbol of Istanbul

One believes that this magnificent spring flower is born in Holland, but in fact its origin is Turkish! Original local name lali became Lale. The Western name is derived from Persian name Thouliban which means Turban.

After growing in the wilderness of Anatolia until the 16th century , it has been offered a prominent place in the gardens of Ottoman palaces in Constantinopolis. Read the rest of this entry »
